A French 18th Century Glass Figure of St. John the Baptist , circa 1750

This small figure is made in the technique known as 'verre filés de Nevers' by building up glass over a metal armature. This sculpture is of a type thought to be created by one of the Haly family of glass makers in Paris in the middle of the 18th century in France - using a technique previously mastered by Venetian glassmakers. Interestingly there is another almost identical version of this figure incorporated into a larger scene composed of various glass figures that is in the Museum of Art in Toledo, Ohio.

Figures of this type were generally smaller and less detailed that this example which is exceptionaly fine. It is now set on a modern wood base.
