A Sèvres Porcelain Sugar Bowl from the Earl of Clare Service, 1787

This is one of four sugar bowls of the shape called sucriers de M. Le Premier costing 132 livres each that were included in a dinner service sold in 1788 from the Sèvres factory with this disctinctive claret ground and fine painting.  We have previously sold two of the remaining examples.

The service was called the Eden Service for years as it was indeed ordered and purchased by the diplomat William Eden who was himself given a bird-decorated service by Louis XVI.  In the last decade we now realise that Eden ordered this on behalf of the Earl of Clare from Ireland and most of the service was sold at Christie's in London in 1891 by his descendants.

One with the painter's mark for M-G Commelin, the other for A-J Foinet, known as 'La France' in the factory.
