A French 18th Century Soft-Paste Sèvres Porcelain Cup & Saucer, circa 1770

A French 18th Century Soft-Paste Sèvres Porcelain Cup & Saucer (gobelet Litron et soucoupe, 1st size), circa 1770.

The ground colour is the dark powdery-blue bleu Fallot ground which became fashionable when developed at the Sèvres porcelain factory in the late 1760s.   Louis XV purchased several vases with this ground for his collection and it was only used for a short period.

Adrian Sassoon sold another large cup and saucer of this pattern about 15 years ago to a collector in the USA.  Whereas this example has white palmettes and trails highlighted in gilding, the other example had these features entirely in burnished and tooled gilding.
