A Hard-Paste Sèvres Porcelain Cup & Saucer, 1785

With the factory mark on both parts in blue enclosing the date letters hh for 1785 under a crown for hard-paste.  Adjacent painter’s mark fz for Jean-Pierre Fumez (active at Sèvres 1777-1804).  The cup also with a faint gilder’s mark of a circle of dots with one in the centre for Boileau le jeune (first name unknown, active at Sèvres 1783-89).

The ground colour, an unusual cornflower blue, is described as ‘petit bleu’ in the painters’ register.  The cup and its presumed pair appear in May 1785, under the lists of work by Jean-Pierre Fumez whose mark is found on this piece.
