A Morter made for the Comte d’Artois, 1776

This mortar mortier is of hard-paste Sèvres porcelain and would have been sold with a large matching punch bowl.  This piece has the date letter y for 1776 and the gilder’s mark for Weydinger. The pattern of this decoration was described as roses et feuillages at Sèvres.

A large group of pieces from the three Sèvres services of this pattern is in the Duke of Bedford’s collection at Woburn Abbey, including another morter and punch bowl. This example comes from a noble French family in the 20th century.
