A Pair of Sèvres Biscuit Porcelain Figures, circa 1780-90
These hard-paste porcelain figures are of Melancoly and Meditation – La Mélancolie et La Méditation. La Mélancolie (height 35cm) was first modelled in 1774 for the Sèvres porcelain factory based on a sculpture by Etienne-Maurice Falconet which had been exhibited in the Salon of 1761. In 1775 La Méditation (height 34cm) was created to form a pair.
One is incised LR 13 for Le Riche who was head of the sculpture studio at Sèvres from 1780. On antique, but later, gilt-wood bases.
