A Plate Painted by Armand l’aîné, 1758-59

This green-ground plate (assiette à palmes) bears the date letter F for 1758-59 and the crescent mark for the painter Louis-Denis Armand l’aîné who was the finest bird painter at the Vincennes and Sèvres factory.

This plate probably comes from one of two sets of green-ground plates sold by the factory in May and July 1759. The May sale was of 72 plates costing 48 livres each and the July sale was for cash to an un-recorded purchaser 24 plates at 60 livres each.  Further plates of this pattern were in the Rothschild collection in the Hôtel Lambert, Paris.
