A Sèvres Cup & Saucer, 1757

A Sèvres  Cup & Saucer (gobelet Hébert & soucoupe) bleu céleste, putto in clouds, factory marks, date letter D for 1757, painter’s mark M for the distinguished porcelain painter jean-Louis Morin (active 1754-87), with original leather box.

The factory’s figure painters mostly copied engravings after paintings by François Boucher for scenes with children and putti, keeping the postures but sometimes clothing them, and normally changing their occupation.  Cup: the putto with the mask is taken in reverse from L’Esté, one of Louis-Félix de La Rue’s series of prints Les Saisons (Jean-Richard 1269) while the one with the impaled hearts is taken from L’Automne, one of La Rue’s series Les Saisons (Jean-Richard 1271).  Saucer: the putto with the flute is taken from La Terre, in La Rue’s series Les Eléments (Jean-Richard 1283), and the one holding flowers is taken from Le Printemps, from La Rue’s Les Saisons (Jean-Richard 1267).
