A Sèvres Porcelain Plate, 1791

This soft-paste porcelain assiette unie is painted with a yellow ground with a black frieze of scrolls and lines. In the centre, a large bird in a landscape.

Factory marks in blue with the date-letter oo for 1791, painter’s mark a sword for Etienne Evans. Inscribed in blue “Martin pécheur vert et blanc de Cayenne”.

This plate comes from a dinner service decorated with exotic birds taken from engravings from the Comte de Buffon’s publication Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux.
