A Soft-Paste Sèvres Porcelain Cup and Saucer, 1775

Each piece with the blue factory mark of interlaced L’s enclosing the date letter x for 1775; painter’s mark for Jean-Louis Thévenet.

This is a gobelet Litron et soucoupe of the first size with a quite elaborately-moulded handle.  The border decoration with gilded lines centred by pale blue ovals seems based on contemporary ribbons.  Between them the spaces formed by v-shaped sweeping lines is charmingly painted with fruit and flowers below sprays of green leaves.  A very unusual and fine piece no doubt made as a collector’s piece rather than as part of a larger tea service.
