A Vincennes Tray painted by Dodin, 1754

This Tray ( plateau du Roi) of the second size has the factory mark, the date letter A for 1755 and the painter’s mark for Charles-Nicolas Dodin (active 1754-1803).  Dodin was one of the most acclaimed figure painters working at Vincennes and Sèvres in the 18th century.  The image of the putto was painted after an engraving by Louis-Félix de La Rue entitled ‘L’Eté‘ (Summer) after a composition by François Boucher.

This tray may have been sold as an individual piece, or perhaps with a matching cup and saucer and covered sugar bowl.
