Literature

This Sèvres porcelain vase, of the third size of this shape, was designed to hold bulbs growing in soil in the upper section, with water for the soil in the lower part. It is decorated with a rare powdery-blue ground colour named bleu Fallot, incrusté with flowers – that is to say with reserves set into the blue painted up to the edges rather than over a white panel. The vase has the mark of the painter Bertrand who worked on other vases of this style.

In 1768 and 1769 the Sèvres Factory made a series of vases with this form of decoration – 20 of which Louis XV bought at the December 1769 presentation of new Sèvres products at Versailles.
