Literature

With the factory mark enclosing the date letter F for 1759; painter's mark for Claude de Savignac is an unusual landscape painter working at the factory at this period.

A very unusual small-scale use of not one but two ground colours. This lavish decoration is more often seen on larger pieces of Sèvres porcelain at this time.

One other pommade pot of this scale with blue and green ground colours 7.3 cm high is known decorated with flowers in the reserves. It has the date letter F for 1759 like the present example and the painter's mark of Taillandier. It was in a series of excellent Sèvres collections in the 20th century ; the Blohm Collection sold Sotheby's, London, 5th July 1960, lot 120; Sir John Plumb (1911-2001), Cambridge, whose collection was bought in the mid-1980s by the banker Robert S. Pirie, New York and Massachusetts (1934-2015) sold Christie's New York, 5th May 1999, lot 69; 'The Pompey Collection', New Jersey sold Christie's New York, 23rd May 2002, lot 18 for $ 33,460.
