In the summer of 2004 Kate Malone began to experiment using a friend’s wood-burning kiln in France. This Pine Cone Box was made with a salt-glazed surface rather than a painted glaze as in Kate’s regular work. This centuries-old technique involves throwing a large quantity of salt into the hot kiln which covers the object inside and burns away forming the glazed surface you see
