More about Hiraeth, 2020
‘Hiraeth’ is a welsh word for longing or nostalgia. The feeling of longing for a home that no longer exists. A deep and irrational bond felt for a time, era, place or person.
"The idea of the piece Hiraeth came about upon reflecting on the longing to return to my birthplace of Northumberland, this combined with a longing to return to a pre COVID world.
I wanted to convey a feeling of being unsettled. The panels are straight not curved, emphasising the harshness, the edges irregular, undulating and sharp.
The inner form appears confined and constricted, trapped within the outer. Held at a distance by the top serriform edge." - Kevin Grey
