Kangaroo and Emu Lost in Chintz, pair of vases, 2010

Glazed eggshell porcelain with onglaze painting

Made by the artist in Jingdezhen, China

The vases carry images that represent a collection of items that may have been brought back to England from an extended voyage to India and Australia. They represent a collection of a colonial past that may have emerged as museum pieces. The Chintz ‘Tree of Life’ pattern was much favoured in the west and the images have been mirrored so that the Emu and the Kangaroo can face each other as in the Australian coat of arms.
