According to ancient Greek mythology the God Zeus turned himself into a swan in order to carry Leda away for his private pleasure. Here Leda is depicted entertaining a black swan from Australia together with the kangaroo brought back to Europe and kept as pets. It has been recorded that Madame Josephine had five black swans and a single kangaroo in her garden at Malmaison, Paris.
