More about Twisted Arita Vase I, 2015
'The town of Arita was the centre for the production of Japanese porcelain wares, exported from the port of Imari in Western Japan between the second half of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century. Known as Imari ware, it is decorated with cobalt blue underglaze with red and gold onglaze. Made only for export to the West, it was often imitated by Chinese and European potters. I based my Arita pieces on a popular floral design, which appealed to me both as an attractive surface pattern and as an example of the way in which fashion, styles, materials and processes have travelled the world.
