Literature
Sample plates such as this one are found dating from the 1770s and 1780s and were a tool of the Sèvres manufactory to demonstrate new schemes of decoration. There is an album of designs that exists from this period showing many ideas for decoration on dinner services and this plate is close to designs in that album. The scheme has many elements that are familiar on completed services such as the ground colour bands over-painted with lines of 'pearls' and the painting of flower garlands on the rim and a bouquet in the centre.
