On the Surface: Flora Inspired Ceramics of Hitomi Hosono at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum
Minnesota Marine Art Museum, 800 Riverview Dr, Winona, MN 55987, United States
View new work by Hitomi Hosono at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, as part of their ‘Flora and Fauna’ programme for 2023.
From their website:
On the Surface features 16 porcelain vessels from Hitomi Hosono, ceramic artist based in London, England, whose detailed porcelain vessels referencing the natural world and botanical specimens grace the collections of the British Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum.
Hosono’s work brings intuition, delicacy and an intuitive touch to her intricate floral creations etched in chalky white clay. Inspired by internationally lauded Wedgwood’s Jasperware, pioneered by Josiah Wedgwood over 200 years ago, in which thin ceramic reliefs or ‘sprigs’ were applied as surface decoration to a piece, Hosono details the veins of a leaf branch and how its edges are shaped to create a poetics in ceramics only her Japanese heritage and mastery of English ceramic tradition can offer.
