This is a cup and saucer of the Litron shape in the very popular 3rd size with an unusual yellow ground. The ornament over that ground is painted in mauve and dark blue which are a quirky combination. This displays how the Sèvres manufactory met the challenge in the 1780s of coming up with novel decoration to complement the band of arabesque ornament at the rim.
Such a piece appears more likely to have been made in perhaps two examples for collectors rather than as a part of a larger matching tea service.
