A Soft-Paste Sèvres Porcelain Sugar Bowl and Cover, 1775

With the factory mark in grey enclosing the date letter x for 1775, adjacent painter’s mark P, for Jean-Jacques Pierre, known as Pierre jeune (active at Sèvres 1763-1800) and gilder’s mark B for Jean-Pierre Boulanger (active at Vincennes and Sèvres 1754-85).

A Sèvres inkstand with decoration described as ‘petits barbeaux & bordure haut et bas’ was supplied by the marchand-mercier Simon-Philippe Poirier to the Comtesse du Barry on 18 December 1770. An inkstand of 1770 with decoration said to match this description is now at Versailles. It is the same as our sugar bowl.
