An Exceptionally Fine Hard-Paste Sèvres Chinoiserie Cup & Saucer, 1779

This gobelet Litron et soucoupe of the second size is decorated with an imagined scene of life in the orient. The scene shows a blind man being led by a dog towards a house where one lady is standing in the door to greet him and other ladies are waiting inside to entertain him.

Marked with the factory mark of interlaced L’s enclosing the date letters BB for 1779, under a crown for hard paste next to the triangular mark for the painter Jean-Jacques Dieu. The factory overtime records for 1779 show that Dieu painted over 20 expensive cups and saucers in that year.

Height of Cup 2 5/8" (6.7 cm)
Diameter of Saucer 5 5/8" (14.1 cm)
